Hue Shift Tutorial

It took me longer than it should’ve to figure out how to make a colour “spectrum” from the same texture! It’s actually a fairly simple and painless process.

I’d strongly suggest getting the hang of how actions work; this won’t teach you how they function, only the steps you need to record for this particular action.

Prep

Prepare your texture on its own layer—it doesn't need to be indexed to the Petz palette yet, as you can convert the results later.

To speed up the process, create a Hue-Saturation preset. I typically use a hue shift between 8-15 —you can experiment to find your preferred gradual change. The larger the shift value, the fewer steps it takes before your texture returns to its original hue.

Make sure “Colorize” is unchecked if you want to maintain the different tones in your texture.

The Action

  1. RECORD (⏺)
  2. Layer → New Adjusment Layer → Hue/Saturation
  3. Load your Preset from dropdown
  4. Ctrl+E (merge down - merges Adjustment layer with original layer)
  5. Ctrl+J (Duplicate layer)
  6. STOP (⏹)

Now you can PLAY (▶) your action and should see a hue shift on each layer!
